Kuje prison in Abuja, Nigeria's Capital city was attacked by Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on July 5, 2022, following which hundreds of inmates were freed, including terrorists.

ISWAP terrorist group has claimed it was behind the attack and killings at the prison facility.

Some of the escapees have been recaptured while some have returned voluntarily; however, many of them are still at large.

SaharaReporters reliably gathered that since the incident though, those who voluntarily returned to the facility and those recaptured have been subjected to harrowing episodes of deprivation and torture.

Sources told SaharaReporters that because an inmate called a serving minister and complained about the inhumane treatment of inmates at the facility, the situation has gone from bad to worse.

SaharaReporters exclusively learnt that the Comptroller of the Correctional Services, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Musa stormed the Centre on August 4, to search the facility.

One of the sources said, "On August 4, the Comptroller of correctional services FCT, came with his men came to search the place for exhibits, owing to a report they received as to the fact that an inmate called a serving minister. This was reported and it brought about the search.

"Trouble began when some of the inmates began peacefully protesting against the incessant search.

"The search party went to reinforce with the armed squad, bringing batons and wire to club inmates. They hit inmates on the head, knees, and ankles. It was a horrible experience."

Another source at the prison facility confirmed the situation, saying, "Ever since the July 5th events, inmates who returned to the centre and those who were recaptured, have been subjected to harrowing episodes of deprivation and lately torture."

"Now, they've stopped inmates from sending for basic utility from the welfare unit. They also asked inmates to remove curtains and are being subjected to unspeakable hardship," the source added.

It was gathered that the action is compounding the trauma of already traumatised persons who witnessed the invasion.
