Ajagu, 50, who hails from Bela village in the Toungo Local Government Area, murdered Ushahemba Ajagu on July 24, 2022, after a heated argument over his selling of tramadol, marijuana, gin and the construction of a tent.

Thomas Ajagu, who has since been arrested and charged to court has pleaded guilty to the alleged offence of unlawful possession of a weapon and culpable homicide.

He reportedly shot his son with a single-barrelled gun, killing him instantly.

However, he explained that his "action was in self-defence".

"I've warned him on several occasions to the extent of reporting him to Hunters Group and the police in Toungo to stop dealing in illicit substances but to no avail.

"After I returned from the farm on the ill-fated day, I met him in the company of friends smoking Indian hemp and trying to erect a tent where he will sell the substances.

"I tried to stop them from erecting the tent, the deceased entered the house and armed himself with a cutlass, and confronted me in an attempt to attack me.

"I accidentally fired a gunshot while trying to defend myself from being hit with the cutlass as a result of which the deceased fell down," Ajagu said.

After the defendant's plea, the prosecutor, Inspector S.S. Nicholas, informed the court that an investigation had been concluded. He then applied for an adjournment to enable the transmission of the case file to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

Chief Magistrate Mohammed Buba granted the application and adjourned the matter to August 23, 2022. The judge ordered the remand of the accused at a correctional centre facility.
