Mohammed Alkali Imam, a staff member of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) who was abducted by Boko Haram has been freed by his abductors.

Alkali, a former cameraman with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), was abducted by the ISWAP faction of the Boko Haram when the outlawed group attacked Monguno on March 10, 2022.

While in captivity, his employers, the IRC, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and numerous humanitarian organisations fought for his release through negotiations with the Boko Haram sect.

Alkali and his colleagues were held hostage at different camps of the terrorists.

His last location was at Tumbum Rago where he was reported to have fallen sick.

Confirming his release, Ag. Secretary of Borno State chapter of NUJ, Comrade Ali Chiroma, said, “Alhamdulillah for the unconditional release of my former colleague and close associate Alkali Babakura Imam. All praises to the Most High.”

Since the death of the leader of Jama'tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad (JAS), also known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has been consolidating its grip in locations around Lake Chad.

The terror group has caused the death of thousands of Nigerians and led to the displacement of millions of people mainly in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
