Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have attacked the convoy of the Zamfara State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Hajia Zainab Lawal Gummi.

The gunmen opened fire on her convoy of three cars around 6 pm on Tuesday at Kwanar Dogon-Karfe, along the Sokoto-Zamfara highway in the Bakura Local Government Area.

She was said to be going from Sokoto to Gusau, Zamfara’s capital.

The terrorists were crossing the road on their way to their hideout when they ran into the commissioner’s convoy.

Gummi in a statement confirmed the attack, saying she barely escaped with her life during the attack.

“None of us were hurt or harmed because we narrowly escaped the ghastly attack despite several shots fired at my car,” she said.

Security agents and civilians have suffered several attacks at the hands of terrorists in the state in recent times.

Agrarian communities in the state have also been terrorised by gangs who raid villages, steal cattle and kidnap residents for ransom.

In 2019, the state government signed a peace agreement with the gunmen.

About 15 brand new Hilux vehicles and cash gifts were also given to leaders of different 'repentant' gangs of bandits by the governor in 2020.

But despite all these, communities in the state are still being attacked and residents kidnapped and/or killed.
