The health of Umaru Yar’adua has become a major issue again as his well published trip to New York might have suffered a set back due to ill health. Yar’adua was billed to address the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday September 24 2008 as the lead speaker for the day but a newly diagnosed organ malfunction might put a stop to the trip.

Sources at the Presidency told SaharaReporters that doctors in Saudi Arabia where Yar’adua recently spent 17 days found scar tissues in his lungs but could not immediately reveal if it the tissues are cancerous.  As earlier revealed by SaharaReporters, Yar’adua suffers from a medical condition known as “Churg Strauss Syndrome”.  A German medical source told our reporters that since Yar’adua was a heavy smoker, he might have Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Our source said Yar’adua had jagged cough and shortness of breath last Wednesday evening forcing him to postpone a “thank you” meeting/dinner with 15 ministers scheduled for the break of the Ramadan fast. iIt was not clear if he was hospitalized overnight, but his Thursday appointments were low keyed and mostly undertaken indoors. Following an escalating relapse of his health condition, Yar’adua reportedly canceled his New York trip based on medical advise which indicated that his lungs could not support a prolonged flight at this time.

Since returning from his medical  trip to Jeddah city in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Yar’adua has yet to dissolve his cabinet as expected since last week. But his handlers have embarked on fresh media propaganda to create an impression that he returned back to Nigeria energized and stronger than he left, even as his trip to New York was being canceled, sources told SaharaReporters that Yar’adua have reached out to major newspaper publishers to put a different spin to the story.

However, one of Yar’adua’s political associates warned SaharaReporters not to report that Yar’adua cannot travel to New York to the UN general assembly, saying, “We are still trying to manage the situation, and miracle might happen”.

The source went further to state that Yar'adua had already scheduled meetings with World Bank officials and a potential lobbyist for the administration in New York for next week, according to the schedule earlier revealed to members of his  inner circle. He expressed surprise at the 'purported' cancellation of the trip insisting that it might be a set up aimed at trapping the critical media.
