Falana trains 100 youths

November 8, 2009

The renowned human rights activist and Lagos lawyer Mr. Femi Falana will on Wednesday November 11th 2009 take about 100 youths on motivational lecture on human rights to be hosted by the Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria, [HURIWA] during its maiden youth mentorship programme in Abuja. HURIWA will also introduce its underprivileged persons’ economic empowerment project [UPPEEP] which is estimated to cost about N100 million.

A statement made available to journalists by HURIWA and endorsed by its national Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko averred that Mr. Femi Falana is expected to train the youth on diverse areas of human rights with strong emphasis on the need for Nigerian youths to be law abiding and embrace human rights activism even as an underprivileged person’s economic empowerment Project would be launched by the human rights writers’ Association of Nigeria to be administered by it.

The group said the N100 million underprivileged person’s empowerment project fund raising event is aimed at establishing a standard information and communications technology training and vocational center. “HURIWA believes that actual and pragmatic poverty eradication projects through human capacity building and vocational training of the large number of unemployed youths and other disadvantaged persons hold the key to the problem of unprecedented crime wave in Nigeria and youth restiveness all across Nigeria. The Rights group argues that all stakeholders including Government owe the nation’s youth the obligation of ending the current harsh regime of economic poverty afflicting a majority of Nigerians so as to avoid violent revolution”.

Dignitaries expected at the event include the minister of information and communications, Professor Dora Akunyili; Director General National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Air vice Marshal Muhammad Audu – Bida (rtd) who will also deliver a keynote address on the theme of disaster management and human rights protection.

Other dignitaries expected are the Deputy Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives Hon. Aminu Bello Tambuwal, Chairmen House Committees on Banking and labour Honourables Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi and Ado Audu Dogo.

Other Human Rights activists who will facilitate the youth capacity training workshop on human rights are the leading civil rights activist in Nigeria Comrade Shehu Sani, and Lagos Lawyer Chief Mike Ozekhome.
