Layers of illegality: Rogue Chief Justice, Katsina-Alu, sworn in

December 29, 2009

Image removed. In a bizarre powerplay that is cynically aimed at preventing Nigeria's "Vice President," Goodluck Jonathan, from assuming political power as stipulated by the constitution, Nigeria's Attorney General, Michael Kaase Aondoakaa today arranged for Justice Aloysius Iyorgha Katsina-Alu, his uncle and mentor, to be sworn in as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) in Abuja.  It is a move that is also calculated at guaranteeing Aondoakaa's political survival.

Justice Katsina-Alu, a retired military officer who hails from the same -Ushongo-local government area as Aondoakaa, has been behind several recent controversial rulings emanating from the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

A source told Sahararporters that the power games in Abuja have now assumed a very dangerous dimension, a lot of politicians are expressing concerns that Aondokaa's actions were aimed at inviting the military to take over power. But the AGF, acting in concert with Yar'Adua's wife, Turai, arranged the swift swearing-in ceremony for Katsina-Alu to ensure that the Supreme Court is "staffed" with justices under his control.  Their principal assignment would be to quash any court order that may emanate from the barrage of lawsuits now pending before various high court judges across Nigeria in which Nigerians are asking that Umaru Yar'Adua be declared to be legally "incapacitated" on account of his prolonged absence from office due to health complications.

Yar'Adua suffers from Churg Strauss Syndrome, an affliction that has now reached an advanced stage, taking down such vital organs as his kidneys, pancreas and lungs, and causing him to come down with a potentially lethal heart condition known as Pericarditis.  He has now been away in a Saudi Arabia hospital for nearly seven weeks.
