The resurrection of “Gang of Four” in Nigeria with the disappearance of President Yar’Adua

March 4, 2010

The name Gang of Four came to limelight during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) in China, it was the name given to a leftist political faction composed of four Chinese Communist Party officials. The members consisted of Jiang Qing, Mao Zedong's last wife and the leading figure of the group, and her close associates Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen.

The Gang of Four, together with disgraced Communist general Lin Biao, were labeled the two major "counter-revolutionary forces" of the Cultural Revolution and officially blamed for the worst excesses of the societal chaos that ensued during the ten years of turmoil. Their downfall in a coup d'état on October 6, 1976, a mere month after Mao's death, brought about major celebrations on the streets of Beijing and marked the end of a turbulent political era in China. They were able to control the lever of power in China due to the inaction and incapacitation of the then Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

The "Gang" had arranged for Deng Xiaoping's purge in April 1976 (however, he would return and by 1978 become the real power of the Party). They hoped that the key military leaders Wang Dongxing and Chen Xilian would support them, but it seems that Hua won the Army over to his side. On 6 October 1976, Hua had the four leading radicals and a number of their lesser associates arrested. A massive media campaign was then launched against them, dubbing them the Gang of Four and blaming them for all the excesses of the Cultural Revolution.

An emergency session of the Politburo was to take place in the Great Hall of the People that evening. Their presence was required. Since Wang Dongxing had been their ally, they did not suspect him... As they passed through the swinging doors into the entrance lobby, they were apprehended and led off in handcuffs. A special 8341 unit then went to Madam Mao's residence at No. 17 Fisherman's Terrace and arrested her. That night Mao Yuanxin was arrested in Manchuria, and the propagandists of the Gang of Four in Peking University and in newspaper offices were taken into custody. All was done with quiet and superb efficiency. In Shanghai, the Gang's supporters received a message to come to Beijing 'for a meeting'. They came and were arrested. Thus, without shedding a drop of blood, the plans of the Gang of Four to wield supreme power were ended.

Immediately after the coup d’etat, Hua Guofeng, who appears to be Mao's designated successor, Marshall Ye Jianying, and economic czars Chen Yun and Li Xiannian formed the core of the next party leadership. These three, together with the newly rehabilitated Deng Xiaoping and bodyguard coup leader Wang Dongxing were elected party Vice Chairmen at the August 1977 11th National Party Congress At the politburo level, the membership of all four living marshals, 7 other generals and at least five others with close military ties reflects the deep concern for national stability.

Jiang Qing and Zhang Chunqiao received death sentences that were later commuted to life imprisonment, while Wang Hongwen and Yao Wenyuan were given life and twenty years in prison, respectively. They were all released later. All members of the Gang of Four have since died; Jiang Qing committed suicide in 1991, Wang Hongwen died in 1992, and Zhang Chunqiao and Yao Wenyuan died in 2005.

Supporters of the Gang of Four, including Chen Boda and Mao Yuanxin, were also sentenced.
What existed as the reign of the “Gang of Four” in China was no doubt almost exactly what Nigerians are experiencing in recent times in our dear nation. Some few people who were close allies of President Umaru Yar’Adua had decided not to disclose his existence or non-existence or his state of health, instead they have resolved to keep his mortal body from the Nigerian electorates and pretend as if everything is alright with the president and that it is in compliance with the instructions of the President they have been acting.

In Nigeria, the cabal that surrounds the presidency of President Umaru Musa YarAdua has effectively ceased the elegant and very powerful Nigerian Military in a purported pursuance of the YarAdua administration. It is consequent upon this and other precursors to imminent sinister national upheavals with international implications that an Abuja based lawyer, Kayode Ajulo has dragged the wife of the president, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua; his ADC, Col. Mustapha Onoedieva; his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Yusuf Tilde, his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Yusuf Tilde, the National Security Adviser, Rtd. Gen. Sarki Muktar; the Chief Of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Abdulralman Danbazau and the Senior Special Adviser to the president on media, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi before the federal high court Abuja.

His arguments focus majorly on the fact that as tax-payers, Nigerians are entitled to have the full knowledge of the existence and state of health of their President. It is reasoned therefore that it would be unconstitutional and rude embarrassment for some cabal to be playing another “Gang of Four” on Nigerians’ intelligent quotients in this civilized age. The Presidency is a creation of the Constitution in Section 130(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and by virtue of that nobody should be allowed to personalise the office. Not even some gangs should be permitted to make another Gang of Four in the Nigerian history.

Will Nigerians allow this to happen, the answer to this question is already getting the desired attention not only from individual like Kayode Ajulo but from Pastor Tunde Bakare, Femi Falana, Mike Igini, Hajia Najaatu Mohammed, Bala Galadima, Yomi Odumakin and host of activists under the banner of Save Nigeria Group as they have vowed that come next Tuesday the seat of Nigerian Government and the office of the President Abuja and Aso villa respectfully will be marched on.

The Eminent Nigerians like General Yakubu Gowon, Shehu Shagari, General Olusegun Obasanjo, Arch. Alex Ekwueme and Chief Edward K. Clark are not resting on their oars as some of them even on wheel chairs have choose to be counted with the people.

The message in Nigeria presently is ENOUGH is ENOUGH. Yes Enough of the rule by the cabal our own version of the China’s GANG OF FOUR.
