Nigerian On Hunger Strike Dies In Zurich Airport During Deportation-AHN

March 18, 2010
Zurich, Switzerland (AHN) - A Nigerian asylum seeker conducting a hunger strike protesting his expulsion from Switzerland died while being deported. The 29-year-old man died Wednesday night at the Zürich airport, just minutes before taking off for Lagos. He was handcuffed and being escorted to the plane when he collapsed.

In an effort to fight his expulsion from the country the man initiated a hunger strike several days ago. Officials of the Swiss Federal Office of Migration have launched an investigation into the cause of his death.

Authorities said the immigrant had been involved in trading illegal drugs and was denied asylum.

About 15 other illegal aliens had been scheduled to board the flight destined for Nigeria. Officials canceled the flight after the incident.

Future deportation flights have been suspended as investigators continue their probe.
