Image removed. With the gruesome killing this week of the mother of a gubernatorial rival to Governor Goodswill Akpabio, the high rate of insecurity in Akwa Ibom has worsened.  The kidnappers are alleged to be working for the second term bid of the Governor.
Saharareporters investigations uncovered that Engr. Udonwa who indicated interest in the Governorship of Akwa Ibom was attacked and shot by gunmen in Akpabio’s hit squad.  He escaped death by the whiskers, and said he had been asked to forget his governorship ambition or have his mother killed.
Earlier this week, the kidnap squad made good their promise they killed Udonwa’s mother and callously dumped her body on the streets.

Members of Udonwa’s family confirmed to Saharareporters that have indeed received such threats from the kidnappers but that they have not had access to Udonwa, who is receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds at an undisclosed location to enable them persuade him to back out.

“Our brother has been receiving treatment and due to the security concerns his location cannot be disclosed (even) to some members of the family because Akpabio’s men have broken into our ranks and we suspect that they are out to eliminate him,” said a relative.

He added: “It has not been possible to even discuss the matter or even seek the views of the governorship aspirant.  The situation in Akwa Ibom has gotten out of hand, only God can save us from this evil government that commits murder in broad daylight,” the family source told Saharareporters.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Walter Rugbere, confirmed the assassination of late Mrs. Udonwa but no clues were offered to resolve the incessant violent crimes many of which are being perpetrated by ‘sacred cows’ loyal to the government of the day.

We gathered that a coupled of Akpabio's kidnap gang arrested by Police who made incriminating statements and dropped the Governor's name were murdered in custody to avoid 'spilling the beans.'

At a public function in Eket where the Akwa Ibom state commissioner of police solicited the support of members of the public, Rugbere admitted that the rate of kidnapping in the state was alarming as prominent people including those in government were being fingered by suspects in his custody.

Security Agencies have reportedly picked up opposition politicians in the state on framed up charges to intimidate them into withdrawing their ambitions.
Senator Udoedeghe, another aspirant, was arrested last week and questioned for the violent crimes perpetrated in the state.

The aspirant was prevented from addressing a rally in Eket a fortnight ago by Akpabio loyalists who used government sponsored thugs and hitmen to disperse a crowd that had gathered to receive Senator Udoedeghe in Eket.

Opposition politicians have become an endangered specie in the state as the government is set out to ‘crush any obstacle’ to the second term bid of Akpabio by any means.
