In the request, which was signed by Olarewaju Suraju, the Chairman of HEDA, the groups drew attention to a story in NEXT newspaper of June 25, captioned, “WAZIRI SIGNED LETTERS THAT EXONERATED ACCUSED POLITICIANS,” pointing out that Mrs. Waziri was alleged to have signed clearance letters for politicians indicted for corrupt acts.

HEDA, which educates the public on human rights, good governance and the rule of law, made the request in a letter to the chairperson of the EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri, made the request in league with the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, Partnership for Justice (PJ) and Citizen Assistance Centre.

“In the pursuit of our commitment to good governance and transparency, we find it necessary to find out the correct position of things; and if indeed the letters were written, to be made known to the public,” the letter said. “We as members and representatives of the public therefore would be grateful for your clarifications on the matter, and to access copies of any such alleged letters by the commission in cases relating to alleged corrupt politicians.”
