Human Trafficking And Child Abuse: NTA General Manager Finally Docked In Ibadan

The general manager of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Ado Ekiti was finally arraigned before a Federal High Court in Ibadan for for child abuse, human trafficking and forced labour.

Princess Folasade Olufunke Bankole, 57, was arrested by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after Saharareporters did a third report about the agency's lack of commitment to pursue her for the crimes of child abuse, assault and human trafficking.

Princess  Bankole is the daughter of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana.

Also arraigned with her was an accomplice, Folasade Adunni.

They were both charged for abusing and forcing into labour a 12 year old Beninoise girl, Rukayat Isiaka, also known as "Buska".

Vanguard newspaper reported that NAPTIP prosecutor, Mr. Ganiyu Oluwarotimi, through charge sheets FHC/IB/65c/2011, stated that "Princess Bankole and Adunni were alleged to have required Rukayat Isiaka, 12 years of age from the Republic of Benin, to be used for forced labour in Nigeria and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 22(1)(a) of the Trafficking in persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, 2003 as amended and punishable of the Act.”

A second count of the offense alleged that the accused employed Rukayat Isiaka from the Republic of Benin as a domestic help outside her own home and from the family environment and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 22 (1) (d)of the Traffic in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act,2003 as amended and punishable under the same section of the Act.

The two accused persons were charged under section 22(1)(A) of Human Trafficking Act which carries a five-year jail term with an option of fine according to the Vanguard report.

The accused persons have been admitted to bail with bail bond amount of N100,000 with one surety in the like sum.

The case is adjourned till January 25, 2012.
