Assassinated Labour Activist Olaitan Oyerinde's Burial For Thursday

The remains of the former Principal Private Secretary to Edo State Governor and notable labour activist, Mr Olaitan Oyerinde will be buried in his home town, Ede, Osun State on Thursday.

Only 44 years old, Oyerinde was brutally killed by unknown gunmen in his home in Benin City last weekend.  He is survived by his wife, Funke, four children, two sisters and aged parents.

The burial will be preceded by a service of songs at the Government House, Benin City on Wednesday, and his corpse is expected to depart Benin City for Ede in a motorcade at 7am on Thursday.

Oyerinde was deputy general secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) before his he was seconded to work with Governor Adams Oshiomhole, a duty he assumed in November, 2007.

A former member of the defunct Nigerian Tenants Association (NTA), Oyerinde began his trade union career with the Iron and Steel Workers Union as assistant general secretary.  He was also the executive director of the Centre for Workers’ Rights (CWR) based in Lagos.

Oyerinde studied Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, where he was a student activist.  He also served as the Lagos State Chairman of the Campaign for Democracy (CD).
