About four persons were killed last night in Tafawa Balewa town of Bauchi State by unknown gunmen who opened fire on three vehicles.

A top security source told SaharaReporters that the incident occurred around a bridge situated at Zuwal in Sayawa area of the Tafawa Balewa local government area.

“The people mainly of Sayawa ethnic extraction were returning to Tafawa Balewa from Bauchi town when they were ambushed,” he said.  “Two people died on the spot, while a woman later died in the hospital.”

Another person was also found dead in the bush into which some people had fled with injuries.

“We are combing the bush looking for other survivors who may have survived but are really incapacitated,” our source said.

He said that the gunmen fled after committing the act, and that none of them was captured when armed security personnel stormed the Zuwal Bridge and nearby areas, trailing the assailants.

The source added that a Fulani cattle herdsman was also killed in the troubled Tafawa Balewa area on Sunday along with about five of his cows.  Christians have been engaged in a feud with Hausa-Fulani Muslims over land and farms in the area.

As of the time of this report, armed soldiers were patrolling Tafawa Balewa.
