The incident occurred as the family of Mr. Jarma was preparing to return his body to Azare for burial.

Mr. Jarma died from gunshot wounds received in an assassination attempt yesterday in Azare. The suspects caught up with him as he was leaving the mosque. He received bullet wounds in the leg and stomach and died at about 11 PM last night at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University teaching hospital in Bauchi.

Family members said the former top ranking prison official died of internal bleeding before he could be taken to the National Hospital in Abuja for further treatment. Two security guards of the retired prison official also lost their lives in yesterday’s attack.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the teenager doused Mr. Jarma's guest house in Azare with petrol and lit it with dynamite. Parts of the building were saved by residents and the teenager was captured and handed over to the police.

His name has not yet been released by authorities nor is the motive known.
