Italy’s inspirational captain, Andrea Pirlo, opened scoring in the 27th minute with a brilliant free kick from 22 yards that swerved tantalizingly over the Mexican wall and confounded goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona.

Mexican striker Javier Hernandez responded in the 34th minute with his side’s only goal from the penalty spot after midfielder Giovani Dos Santos was brought down in the box.

The contest was settled in the 82nd minute when Mario Ballotelli muscled past two Italian defenders in the six-yard box to bundle in the final goal.

The first Group B match, between Spain and Uruguay, comes up later today.  Nigeria, which is in the same group, takes the field in its first match, against Tahiti, on Monday.
