Delta State National Assembly Member Charged With Falsification, Forgery

Ossai Nicholas Ossai, a member of the National Assembly for Delta State, is facing charges of falsification and forgery at the High Court in Asaba.

Ossai Nicholas Ossai, a member of the National Assembly for Delta State, is facing charges of falsification and forgery at the High Court in Asaba.

An official court document in the possession of SaharaReporters charges that Ossai, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party representing Ndokwa/Ukwani constituency, manufactured and tendered election results and uttered fictitious statements before the Election Petition Tribunal in October 2012.

The document details four charges: forgery, uttering of false documents, procuring execution of false documents by pretense, and making documents without authority.

Ossai, who is said to be eyeing the governorship of Delta in 2015, is alleged to have falsely claimed that the result sheets he tendered originated from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Those sheets upturned the previous election decision, which had given the seat to Olisa Imegwu, a former Speaker of the House, in Ossai’s favor.  That decision was later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

Following protests by Imegwu and subsequent investigation, Ossai’s tendered documents came into question. It is unclear under what circumstances an individual candidate in an election provided the returns by which the contest was decided in the first place.

Further investigations revealed that Ossai may have manufactured the documents for his own political benefit.
