A source told SaharaReporters that the fire originated from a sparking electrical wire at the hotel’s gas station. In a phone conversation a member of the hotel’s contract staff described the initial spark as a “disco light” followed by a bursting of flames.

There were reports of chaos as hotel patrons flung bags from the hotel windows and fled from the burning area. A source said guests were fortunate that the engulfed gas station was not located immediately next to the hotel, allowing the guests to escape unharmed. As of now, no serious casualties had been reported. However, an on-duty security guard sustained minor burns while attempting to put out the flames, a source said.

At the time of this report fire brigade officers were still on the scene battling the flames.
