Seven corpses in all were deposited at the morgue of the hospital but only one was released earlier in the week after it was identified by the concerned family. But over the last two days, five more have been released.

“We had earlier released only one body but in the last two days, we have released five more bodies to family members of the deceased. We are left with one body and it will be released to the family members after proper identification”, hospital spokesman, Dr. Tayo Haastrup said on Saturday.

At least 23 people died while many more sustained varying degrees of injury during a stampede at the National Stadium, Abuja and other venues across the country as well, in the test conducted by the Nigeria Immigrations Service (NIS).

President Goodluck Jonathan then announced after Wednesday’s edition of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that families of murdered victims should automatically be allotted three job positions each, while every injured applicant should also be automatically employed. The result was the emergence of dozens of applicants claiming to have been injured as well, even though they were not initially listed in the casualty toll.

And Haastrup, who expressed hope that the two women still on admission at the hospital would be discharged soon, confirmed that a number of applicants had shown up at the hospital claiming they were also injured. He said the hospital turned them down, instead directing them to lodge their claims at the office of the Nigerian Immigration Service.

“The management has a list of people who were treated and admitted at the hospital as a result of the stampede”, he said.

“We cannot be fraudulent and begin to include names of people we did not treat; so we have asked them to go to the appropriate office. We will release the list of the victims to the appropriate authorities when it is needed”.
