Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) said it suspended its labour action that had lasted ten months. They took this action for a few grounds they considered at their emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting today.

Speaking on considerations at their meeting held at the Labor House in Abuja earlier today, Dr. Chibuzo Asomugha, the Chairman of the Polytechnics lecturers union, told a SaharaReporters correspondent that they considered, among other issues, their students and stakeholders.

Prominent among their considerations, Asomugha said, was the request by the newly appointed Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, pleading for time ‘to work on the underlying issues.’

"We also considered his (Shekarau) request to allow him some time, so he'd be able work on the demands," Asomugha said to a SaharaReporters correspondent.

He said they have only ‘relaxed’ their industrial action for three months, adding that lecturers will resume work on Tuesday.

The lecturers commenced their strike in October 2013, which the former Education Minister, Nyesom Wike, failed to find any solution to. The affected students had also used their means of protest to show solidarity with their lecturers.
