Rilwan Lukman, a former Minister of Petroleum in Nigeria, has died in Austria. A source disclosed to SaharaReporters that Mr. Lukman passed after a prolonged battle with prostrate cancer.

He was aged 76.

Mr. Lukman's era as Petroleum minister first as minister between 1986 and 1990 under the Ibrahim Babangida dictatorship and later between 2008 and 2010 under late Umaru Yar’adua’s regime, was marked both by a high profile role, including his chairmanship of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), as well as corrupt deals that reportedly made the late minister extremely wealthy.

Since leaving his ministerial post, Mr. Lukman had lived a substantial time in different European countries running his private business interests.
