has been impeached.

Nwazunku was impeached on Monday morning after a motion moved by Chris Usulor (Ezza South), which was seconded by  Enyi C. Enyi (Ezza North-West).

Three members of the assembly (Frank Onwe, Eni Uduma Chime and, Blaise Orji who is Deputy Speaker) had been suspended before Monday’s sitting, but 18 of the 24-man assembly first reversed the suspension before impeaching the speaker.

Eni Uduma Chima (Afikpo South West) then moved the motion for election of  Helen Nwaobasi (Abakaliki South) as new Speaker, a motion that was duly seconded Jerry Obasi.

The impeachment of the speaker continues the recent wave of removal of elected officers in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Governor of Adamawa State, Governor Murtala Nyako was impeached last week, and Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, who was served an impeachment notice on Thursday, is believed to be next in line.

There have been reports — as well as denials — that the Oyo State House of Assembly is currently planning to impeach the Governor of the state, Abiola Ajibmobi.
