Frequent Armed Robbery, Insecurity Causes FRCN Training School Students to Stay Home

"They are majestic and seem indomitable" one official said of the robbers who were said to casually walk into rooms since there was inadequate security.

"And who dares challenge thick and hefty men with weapons, anyways?" said another staff member.

Students at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Training School in Lagos have begun deserting its premises over sustained robbery attacks lately.

The students’ decision to leave the school premises followed a lengthy attack on Thursday night in which students' belongings and mobile gadgets were carted away. Some female students were reportedly molested by the robbers.

The attack on Thursday was the third in only two weeks. Previously, robbers had attacked staff quarters on the premises. Following the staff quarters incident another robbery targeted the Bond FM Radio, a radio broadcast station sharing premises with the Training School.

Reports indicate Thursday’s robbery involved the invasion of the students' hostel quarters and resulted in the hospitalization of an asthamatic student. Student sources also told SaharaReporters that some female students were molested, although none of the victims confirmed this.

Staff sources said that robbery attacks were not new to them, but had become increasingly brazen and more frequent. One official told SaharaReporters that neglect of the property by the government had caused surrounding vegetation to become dense and encouraging criminal activity.

"And who dares challenge thick and hefty men with weapons, anyways?" said another staff member.

"They would succeed operating on the Radio Station itself even with the Police presence if they wished to. They came in when the policemen had fallen asleep themselves", said another source.

A SaharaReporters correspondent who visited the premises confirmed that the fences were outgrown by weeds whilst smokers loitered at the surrounding expanse.

Formerly regarded as a prestigious training institution for aspiring broadcasters and journalists across West Africa, FRCN Training School is now seen as neglected and poorly managed.

Some officials at the school explained that the tenure of previous school director, Anthony Adione was the worst thing to happen to the school. "Even the sign post of Bond FM and some paintings you see around now are done after Adione left. He made sure nothing changed. Instead, he left all to rot", a source told Saharareporters.

"The entire school and Radio Station require total upgrade", she added.
