Unknown gunmen on Friday assassinated the Executive Secretary of Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC), Mr Simon Akpen, in Yenagoa.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Valentine Ntomchukwu, confirmed the killing of the BYSIEC official on Saturday.
The Police commissioner said Mr. Akpen’s murder is suspected to be a case of assassination as his attackers left his residence after his death without tampering with his valuables.
"In my opinion, it may be a case of assassination because they didn't take anything away after killing him", said Ntomchuwku, who added that he already visited the scene of the crime on Friday evening immediately the police received signal about the killing.
The assailants shot the victim in the head as he alighted from his car near his residence off Otiotio Road at about 10pmn on Friday night.
Sources said Akpen, who hailed from Ofoni in Sagbama Local Government Area, died on the spot.
The armed bandits were said to have laid an ambush for him as he returned home from an outing.
His killers fled the scene of the crime after accomplishing their dastardly mission.
