The Nigerian Prison Service on Saturday denied reports of a jailbreak in the Medium Security Prison in Kirikiri, Lagos on Friday.
According to PRNigeria, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Prison Service, Ope Fatiniku, confirmed in an email yesterday that there was a riot in the facility on Friday afternoon in which one person died and seven were injured.
He stated that the riot was immediately brought under control by the authorities, and that none of the prisoners escaped.
The Acting Comptroller-General of Prisons, Aminu Suley, immediately set up a probe panel into the incident.
According to Mr. Fatiniku, three of the injured were treated and discharged from the Prison's Clinic, while the others were admitted in various hospitals.
The dead man was one of the four inmates that had been taken to the hospital. The identities of the men involved were not disclosed due to security reasons.
