A family source told SaharaReporters Mr. Akinbiola was kidnapped at a petrol station on the Benin/Ore Expressway in Ondo state.

His abductors were speculated to have been on his trail for two days before successfully carrying out the abduction.

It is not yet clear if the kidnapped former council boss was the owner of the petrol station but he was said to have been holding a meeting with his supporters when he was forcefully hijacked and whisked away at the station.

Our correspondent gathered that Akinbiola is planning to contest election into the Ondo House of Assembly and has been consulting on which platform to contest.

Friends and supporters of the ex-council boss disclosed that his abduction might have a political undertone.

Wole Ogodo, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, confirmed the kidnap case to our correspondent in Akure.

"We are making frantic effort to ensure the abducted politician is rescued alive," he said.

Family members said the kidnappers got in touch to demand N20 million as ransom money.
