Parliamentary lawmakers confirmed the initiation of a probe into the Nkandla affair on Monday. This comes after a South African prosecutor published a report in March charging that President Zuma had “benefited unduly” from security upgrades conducted at the Nkandla residence and should pay back a portion of the total bill, which amounted to some $24 million.

The Nkandla residence security upgrades include controversial additions such as a modern amphitheatre, a chicken run, a swimming pool and a private clinic.[story_link align="left"]34645[/story_link]

President Zuma has previously claimed that he was not informed of the controversial upgrades, pinning responsibility on the project’s architect.

Meanwhile, an opposition leader who has previously called for President Zuma to resign over the corruption allegations welcomed news of the probe.

"Now the police must do their jobs," saidMmusi Maimane, leader of the Democratic Alliance.
