GEJ's Birthday Assault on Nigerian Democracy

November 20, 2014

For the watching Nigerian populace, if Mr President expects to get votes from right thinking Nigerians given the actions he has repeatedly embarked upon, it will mean to say that a greater number of us, do not think properly, that our common intelligence is expected to be compromised by the greater powers of religion and ethnicity.

Hopefully, someone reading this will excuse my language.

The president of Nigeria has over time assaulted the country, the constitution (he is supposed to protect) and the democracy he is supposed to be  a custodian of, repeatedly.

The use of the police in harassing politicians who do not seem to be on the same page with him is unbecoming of a president in a democratic setting.

The use of the police to engage in repeated drama against the governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi is well documented.

The use of the police in storming the meeting of 7 governors who at the time all belonged to the PDP is also well documented.

The use of the police twice now in the harassment of the speaker of the house of representatives is his latest abuse.

Consider this, the police without a court order is now interpreting the constitution of Nigeria.

The police today attempted to block the entry of opposition members of the house of representatives into the legislature.

Remember also the roles played by the police in blocking the entry of opposition governors into states where governorship elections recently held.

Do not also forget, the roles played by the police in arresting Nasir El-Rufai while he was at Anambra state, when an election held there last year.

While some people have foolishly argued against state police, despite the fact a sole central police is an aberration in a federal state (bar Nigeria and South Sudan), the political ends to which federal police is being used suggests that abuse is not far from that end either.

While some people were foolishly taken in by the president’s “I have no shoes” story in 2011 and claimed they had voted him in rather than the party he belonged to, it is very obvious now that the president for whatever your money’s worth is not in position for any form of governance whatsoever.

Look at it from this angle, the president wanted an extension of emergency rule in 3 northeastern states, an emergency which is to be renewed every 6 months as stipulated by the constitution, the National Assembly which has the job of acceding to that request wanted to reconvene from its recess earlier than scheduled to match the president’s intention with requisite action, only for the president to use the police to bar the House of representatives from reconvening. Yet the assent of the legislature is required for the emergency to continue.

So the question is, which is more important, the conquering of the terrorism in North eastern Nigeria, which necessitated the emergency in the first place, or the need for Mr President to deal with a speaker his party does not have the requisite numbers to impeach in the first place.

To proceed, one will also like to ask the question, what should we expect from him in the 2015 elections, when even INEC has neither shown seriousness nor competence required to conduct a credible election.

To add more, how does the president expect ordinary Nigerians (who do not belong to his ethnic group) or geographical location to interpret his actions? Take for example the average northerner, is it that the president despite his obvious inactions, acts of incompetence and lack of empathy towards the people and region ravaged by terrorism still expects to get any credible votes from those places now that the only proof of the existence of action from his administration is to act against poltical office holders from that region?

Or does he expect the average Yoruba man who as a result  of his obvious education and sophisticatedness  often take the lead to stand against his own kith and kin?

Ask Oshiomole and Obasanjo, it was the Yoruba man standing against a Yoruba president led by an Edo man in protest that often kept him on his toes as president. So GEJ should expect nothing from them when the time comes.

Amidst all this, we  realize that today, when the president used the police to act against the speaker of the house of representatives is also his birthday. This medium wishes him a happy birthday and prays that May Nigeria never ever see the likes of him again. After 2015. Amen.
