Six, Including Two Female Suicide Bombers, Killed In Double Blasts At Kano Market

Four persons and two female suicide bombers were killed in a double bombing today at a popular Kano market, security officials say.

The blasts occurred at a vehicle loading area leading to the largest market in northern Nigeria Kano's Kantin Kwari Market, reports state.

Aderele Shinaba, Kano Police Commissioner, said the two suicide bombers, described as "two young girls in hijab," were masquerading as shoppers before the blast.

Reports allege the women drew much attention when the became engaged in a loud argument with some merchants, a scene that attracted many persons. The explosives detonated shortly after.

"They came by the market and asked to be directed to a public convenience. The bombs detonated, killing them and four others," he said.

Speaking to AFP today, Abdullahi Abubakar, secretary of the market traders' syndicate, said the first bomber struck near toilets at about 2:30 p.m. The second attack happened just after.

The attack occurs the same day Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other All Progressives Congress members are convening in Lagos for the party's national convention. The governor is vying for the party's endorsement for the presidency.

A number of others were severely injured in the attack, and are undergoing treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital.
