Ex-Soldiers Protest Over Unpaid Pension During Armed Forces Remembrance Day In Ondo

The ex-servicemen told journalists that they were protesting to register their displeasure over government neglect to their plight, despite fighting for the country during the civil war.

On Thursday in Akure, capital of Ondo State, ex-soldiers who had served Nigeria during its civil war joined their counterparts across the country to protest against the federal government's refusal to pay their pension arrears.

SaharaReporters gathered that the protesters staged their protest at the 2015 Armed Forces Remembrance Day held at the government cenotaph in the Alagbaka area of the state.

The ex-servicemen told journalists that they were protesting to register their displeasure over government neglect to their plight, despite fighting for the country during the civil war.

They berated the federal government for the continuous remembrance of fallen heroes while those alive were abandoned for suffering. 

“You cannot continue to waste funds on flowers for the fallen heroes while the living ones are suffering and dying. Let them pay us our arrears,” one of the protestors said.

A SaharaReporters correspondent learned that the federal government has being owing the ex-soldiers their pension since 2010.
