The Pan-Yoruba socio-political body, Afenifere , on Tuesday endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term in office following a meeting with him in Akure, Ondo State.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors in the compound of Chief Reuben Fasoranti, lasted two hours.

A reliable source within the group told Saharareporters that the endorsement was granted to Mr. Jonathan so he can quickly implement the 2014 National Conference report.

That account was confirmed by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who accompanied the president on the visit.  He told waiting journalists that Jonathan was endorsed by the group based on his agenda and his promise to implement the report.

ARG publicity secretary Yinka Odumakin also told the journalists: “Afenifere supports him so that he can complete the implementation of the National Conference [report]; that is the purpose of his visitation.”

President Jonathan was however less forthcoming on the nature of the visit, saying he was on a courtesy visit as a sign of respect to the leaders of the socio-cultural group ahead of his campaign in the state tomorrow.
