Policemen involved in extortion of SaharaReporters Crew In Nigeria

The Nigeria Police has requested more information on a story by SaharaReporters about how its crew was waylaid on a Nigerian road last January, in a report captured on video.

The video shows policemen operating an illegal roadblock on New Year's Day in Ogun State.  The men are seen harassing motorists, including the SaharaReporters news crew, asking for bribes.

On Monday, police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Shogunle contacted SaharaReporters by phone and a tweet asking us to provide the date and place of the extortion.

The incident happened on the Lagos-Benin highway, just a few kilometers after the crew passed Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state.  Unknown to the policemen, led by one Afolabi who was in plain clothes, the SaharaReporters team had turned on their video cameras as they were being stopped.  We subsequently published the video.
