Petrol Tanker Explosion Razes 34 Houses, 70 Shops In Ejigbo Area Of Lagos

As a result of the explosion, 34 houses and 70 shops had completely burnt off with all the belongings of their occupants.

A petrol tanker exploded at the around midnight, burning down residences and retail business shops at the intersection between Idimu-Ejigbo and Idimu-Ikotun bus stops. 

The explosion occurred around 12am. Eye witnesses said the tanker skidded off its lane in a dangerous overtaking speed with a commercial bus competing with it.

Some witnesses also told Saharareporters that a roadside "suya" roaster's fire had started the explosion when contents of the fallen tanker spilled on the road.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) who are working on the site of the inferno told our correspondent that the driver of the tanker is on the run. One official said it has been the attitude of tanker and freight drivers to always flee whenever they have accidents with their vehicles.

As a result of the explosion, 34 houses and 70 shops had completely burnt off with all the belongings of their occupants. One commercial tricycle, also known as "Marwa"  was burnt in the explosion. No causalities were reported.
Rescue operatives were still fighting the fire and evacuating the wreckage of the tanker at time of this report. The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is also expected to visit the scene this morning.
