Mr. Oniya described the assassination of Dr. Adejobi as barbaric and saddening to all lecturers in the country.
On Wednesday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) expressed great fear over the rising number of killings and kidnappings against its members across the country.
On Tuesday night, unknown gunmen suspected to be hired assassins shot and killed a lecturer, Dr. Deji Adejobi, of the Department of Agricultural Economics of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife (OAU). SaharaReporters gathered that the deceased is an older brother of the Ogun State Police Spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi.
The late Adejobi was killed after being chased into his residential compound around 10 PM.
Through its local chapter at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), the ASUU said such criminality is now becoming a trend and said the government must respond “urgently.”
Bola Oniya, the Chairman of the ASUU, expressed these concerns at a press conference held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Mr. Oniya described the assassination of Dr. Adejobi as barbaric and saddening to all lecturers in the country. He said ASUU members are now worried why ordinary, unarmed university lecturers would be the targets of murderous killings happening at the hands of armed men. "We were bedeviled recently with a flurry of kidnappings… We feel threatened by the state of insecurity in this country. We don't know why we are now the targets,” he said.
The Chairman also condemned the gruesome killing of the former Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Albert Ilemobade, who was murdered last month by his household staff.
Mr. Oniya, who was pessimistic about the events that led to the grisly killing of Mr. Ilemobade, said officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State must do more in their investigation to unravel the causes.
