US President Barack Obama landed in Ethiopia on Sunday in the country's first visit by a sitting American president.

In contrast to the thousands that greeted Mr. Obama in Nairobi, few braved the steady rain to see the president's passing motorcade in Addis Ababa. Children with flowers, along with a host of government ministers, greeted him at the airport.

The American president plans to meet on Monday with regional leaders to discuss South Sudan and counterterrorism issues. He will also hold bilateral meetings with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and attend a state dinner.

He concluded his visit to Kenya with a Sunday speech that mixed personal reflections with tough messages challenging Kenyans to move past gender discrimination and corruption.
