November 4, 2015

It will be recalled that SaharaReporters recently published a report on a letter sent from House Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila to Mr. Dogara regarding the latter’s failure to properly consult with the APC leadership concerning the appointment of chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of House Committees.

Nigeria's House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, reportedly met with chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of key House Committees today to address the threat of mass resignations.  According to the Nation newspaper, the meeting occurred shortly after Mr. Dogara’s return from a trip to Israel.

The Speaker appealed to the assembled committee chairpersons to hold on to their current positions in the interest of maintaining crucial unity within the lower House.

This letter revealed a leadership style on Mr. Dogara’s part which Gbajabiamila claimed was high-handed and authoritarian.  Some observers believe that the rumored mass resignation is motivated in large part by a resentment towards Mr. Dogara.
