One source disclosed that the loss of life was likely caused by gunfire during the battle between Boko Haram and Nigerian soldiers.

According to a Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) source, the military successfully repelled the attack and confiscated Boko Haram’s utility vehicles. The source also stated that some soldiers were injured during the assault.

A military source speaking with SaharaReporters on the condition of anonymity said "Boko Haram made an attempt [on the installation] but we repelled it killing five of them. We recovered an AA gun mounted on vehicle, utility vehicles, and some rifles."

Bama was recaptured last year by the Nigerian military and it is about 78 kilometers away from Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State.
