Major General Yusha'u Mahmood Abubakar died in a car accident on the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway on Tuesday, according to Army spokesman SK Usman. SaharaReporters previously reported that Mr. Abubakar had died, but many details of the accident could not be confirmed.

The two military officials were on official assignment when their car crashed a few kilometers away from Benisheik, along the Maiduguri-Kano highway, while en-route to Yobe State.
According to the military source, Mr. Abubakar was received by Mr. Aliyu at Maiduguri International Airport. The generals were on their way to a special military force graduation in Buni Yadi, Yobe State.
Mr. Aliyu was rushed to the emergency ward at the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.
Yobe State Deputy Governor Abubakar Ali offered his sympathy to the family of the late general and the Nigerian Army on behalf of the people of Yobe State. He described the loss of Mr. Abubakar as a great loss for the military and Nigeria.
"Our hearts are grief with the family of the late General and the Nigeria Army. This is not just a loss to the family but the nation,” Mr. Ali condoled.
Mr. Abubakar was the Theater Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri before he became Director of Military Training at the Defense Headquarters in Abuja.
