Fire Destroys More Than 3,000 Shops At Sabon-Gari Market In Kano State

More than three thousand shops at the Sabon-Gari market in Kano State have been destroyed by fire, which began around 4am.

Thick smoke plumes have engulfed the entire market and shops, including banks, have been burned down according to a SaharaReporters correspondent at the scene.

Radio announcements throughout the State are asking people to assist to put out the blaze. The State government have also suspended month sanitation operations and pleaded that the public assist efforts to end the fire.

Fire fighters from a private company arrived the scene of the fire but are currently batting the blaze, according to most recent reports.

Air Force fire fighters also arrived the scene to assist in efforts.

The Director of State Fire Service, said "the fire started at midnight and we are still battling to put it off.”

He said all the fire service vehicles have been dispatched to the scene, while some other sister fire fighters have arrived to support their efforts.

The Director said the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.

He said so many people sustained injuries due to the fire but no deaths are recorded.
