Declare Andy Uba's Seat Vacant, PDP Senators Tell Saraki

February 21, 2017

Mr. Uba, who represents Anambra South, recently dumped the PDP to pitch his tent with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday called on Senate President Bukola Saraki to declare vacant the seat of Senator Andy Uba.

Mr. Uba, who represents Anambra South, recently dumped the PDP to pitch his tent with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

On Tuesday, Mr. Saraki officially announced his defection, which was warmly welcomed by APC lawmakers. However, PDP senators, under the leadership of Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio, requested that Mr. Uba’s senate seat be declared vacant.

Mr. Akpabio argued that there was no crisis within the PDP warranting Mr. Uba’s defection, and because he successfully contested for the seat on the PDP ticket, the party should be permitted to replace his seat with a PDP lawmaker.

He argued further that it would be wrong for Mr. Uba to allow the APC to inherit the mandate freely given to him on the PDP platform.

Mr. Uba currently chairs the Committee on Public Accounts, a seat traditionally reserved for the opposition.
