A Magistrate Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Wednesday sentenced Godbless Abe to eight years in prison for defiling two young children.
Mr. Abe, who hails from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was charged with two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a four-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy.
The ruling was handed down by Chief Magistrate Utovie Spiff.
The police reportedly arrested Mr. Abe on Tuesday and arraigned him on Wednesday before the court, where he pleaded guilty to the two counts.
Our correspondent gathered that Mr. Abe had been in the habit of sexually assaulting young children, but his crimes had gone unreported until the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) reported the latest case to the police, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
Dise Ogbise-Erhisere, chairperson of the FIDA in Bayelsa State, was contacted by concerned locals who knew Mr. Abe raped the four-year-old girl.
“I was informed by neighbors that the convict is a serial molester of children and that the mother of the four-year-old girl caught him having carnal knowledge of her daughter,” she said.
Expressing delight over the judgment, Mrs. Ogbise-Erhisere said it is a victory for FIDA Bayelsa and a warning to pedophiles, child molesters, and abusers.
She said she was impressed with the speedy dispensation of justice on the case and commended the police for swiftly arresting and arraigning the man.
Mrs. Ogbise Erhisere also praised the members of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Bayelsa State chapter, for their roles in treating the victims.
