Ekiti Guber Election Should Not Be Policed - Situation Room

"We have repeatedly raise concerns about the security aspect of the election looking at how INEC has indicated its preparadness for the election.

Clement Nwanko, the Co-converner of the election Situation Room has raised the concern over the security formation in Ekiti State ahead of the Saturday's governorship election.

Mr Nwanko said that the presence of heavy security agencies that had been deployed to Ekiti State was a source of concern.

He spoke to Sahara Reporters crew while speaking on the preparadness of the civil society organizations monitoring the Saturday gubernatorial election.

He noted that the state has already been policed with the numbers of security personnel deployed to the state to ensure the elections is free, fair and credible.

According to Nwanko, the Ekiti State governorship election would be a litmus test ahead of the 2019 general election.

"We have repeatedly raise concerns about the security aspect of the election looking at how INEC has indicated its preparadness for the election.

"We are watching the security situation very closely, and don't forget that there are issues raised by the incumbent Governor about his encounter with the security forces.

"I must say that as we have mentioned severally in the last seven months that the security aspect of this country would be a major focus.

"And how the security forces conduct themselves would be the major determination of the legitimacy of the electoral process and we are folloing this very closely.

"We really urged the police and the security services to understand that elections in Ekiti here is going to be a major determinate of how the country perceived preparedness for the elections in 2019.

"We saw a lot of arrivals of security and mostly the police coming into the town but our big concern is that this Saturday election must not be over policed.

"The numbers that we have seen, the police force said they are deploying 30, 000 policemen to be in Ekiti state for a state where you have about nine hundred and seventy registers voters.

"Usually, it would not be more than fifty percent of that number voting and we use to have about fifty percent voting then you are talking about half a million people.

"Thirty thousand police officers alone, we don't know how many the army has indicating it's deploying, we don't know how many the NSCDC is deploging but we feel that it's a major concern that this election should not be over policed" he said.

Mr. Nwanko stated that the people of Ekiti state promised to come out tomorrow but want confidence that they would be protected enough in exercising their franchise.

"But we also don't want them to be scared away from coming out to vote becuae of the overwhelming intimidating presence of police officers" he added.
