NASS Invasion Cannot Be Justified In A Democracy, Says Saraki

“The heavy presence of armed security men who unnecessarily militarized the National Assembly and harassed legislators and the workers in the complex cannot be justified in a democracy,” Saraki said.

Senate president Bukola Saraki says Tuesday’s the invasion of the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) should ordinarily not happen in a democracy.

“The heavy presence of armed security men who unnecessarily militarized the National Assembly and harassed legislators and the workers in the complex cannot be justified in a democracy,” Saraki said.

“We urge Nigerians and the international community to condemn this illegal invasion of the National Assembly complex and the attempt to asphyxiate the legislature as undemocratic, uncivilized and irresponsible.”

DSS officials invaded the National Assembly, leading to the sacking of Lawal Daura, Director-General of the DSS, by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

The National Assembly leadership thereafter called off its scheduled joint meeting, which was to, among others, consider President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for funds for the organization of the 2019 elections.
