Edoro said the lawmakers that carried out the impeachment lacked the two-third majority spelt out by the 1999 Constitution, and that 16 members formed the two-third majority of the 24 member-legislative house.
The impeached Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Victor Edoro, yesterday, said his alleged impeachment cannot stand.
Edoro said the lawmakers that carried out the impeachment lacked the two-third majority spelt out by the 1999 Constitution, and that 16 members formed the two-third majority of the 24 member-legislative house.
“As it affects Edo House of Assembly, we must have 16 members. As we speak, there are only six members. So, they do not have the number.”
Edoro said majority of those alleged to have signed the impeachment letter had denied signing it, adding that they were dwelling on serious illegality that could not work.
“Why would someone have a desperation to become a speaker? How did I plan to impeach the speaker? What is high-handedness? I think they do not know what they are talking about,” he said.
He also denied the allegation of corruption and accused the speaker of allegedly misappropriating funds meant for the house.
“Do I have resources to handle as the deputy speaker? Why would corruption come in? He (Adjoto) is the one that is corrupt,” he said.
He, however, alleged that the speaker was trying to create a problem between Comr. Adams Oshiomhole and Gov. Godwin Obaseki by telling the governor that the APC National Chairman was using them to impeach him (Adjoto) so that they could impeach the governor.
