"There have actually been lots of comments on the issue of Trader Moni, money being shared by the Vice President Yemi Osibanjo to traders, and people have insisted that it is a form of vote buying," Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed plans to investigate if the Trader Moni scheme of the Nigerian government is a form of "vote buying".
He said he had received complaints that government was using the scheme to buy votes for the general election, and stated that the commission would look into it.
He stated this when he addressed newsmen om Friday in Abuja, when he visited the headquarters of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
His words: "There have actually been lots of comments on the issue of Trader Moni, money being shared by the Vice President Yemi Osibanjo to traders, and people have insisted that it is a form of vote buying."
He said the commission would “study all the comments we have heard from people and know if it is the type is issue we should be tracking.”
He also said the commission had put in place measure to track campaign finances.
Speaking on his visit to FRSC, he said the commission is looking into ways to partner with FRSC to ensure that vehicles that would be used for transporting election materials are tracked in order to prevent a situation where they abscond with election materials.
