If You Can’t Tackle Insecurity, You Have No Business In Politics, Onaiyekan Tells Politicians

“If you have no idea of how to develop Nigeria through education, security, amongst others then, do not go into politics. This same kidnapping issue happened along Lokoja /Kabba road some years back; I could not travel then."

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has advised politicians who are not capable of dealing with insecurity in the country to retire from politics.

Onaiyekan made the call while speaking on irregular migration today in Abuja.

The cleric noted that the country is being ravaged by bandits and kidnappers operate freely with the military not being able to curb their actions.

He blamed this on the inactions of politicians to safeguard the lives and properties of the people.

Onaiyekan said, “If you have no idea of how to develop Nigeria through education, security, amongst others then, do not go into politics. This same kidnapping issue happened along Lokoja /Kabba road some years back; I could not travel then.

“I could not understand that 30km of road cannot be policed. It just gives you a very sad impression that we are really at the mercy of the criminals. So you get ready to pay them, this is not the way to live.

“The Abuja/Kaduna road. The government and police have told us several times that they have put up high level security checks and that they have cleared the road but the boys have come up and said that they are still operating on the road.

“It is sad that the kidnappers operate regularly on the highway and demand ransom and not only that they go to the extent of collecting the ransom.”

He called on the Nigerian government, politicians and all security agencies to put more efforts into protecting Nigerians.
