OAU Students Cry For Help As Cultists' Threat Letter Causes Panic On Campus

“Let me take you down the memory lane. They wrote a similar letter in 1999 that they would be coming on July 7 but they launched the attack on July 10.” This is just the exact form they came and I fully know that some persons will think that the University has a security unit that guarantees security,” he disclosed.

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have raised an alarm over a threat letter sent by cultist to the university.

Acccording to a correspondence with SaharaReporters by a student Owoeye Olaoluwa in the university, prior to the threat letter, there was an organized cultist attack on students and members of the alumni in the early hours of Friday, May 3, during the performance of hip–hop star Zlatan Ibile at the Amphitheatre.

The source added As if that was not enough, they got a letter through a certain ‘OJU’ that the cultists will again strike on the 1st of June, 2019. Alora Cnfranternity

In all of this, Owoeye said the school authorities have shown little or no interest in protecting the students.

“The body language of the DSA on security matters affecting students is not good enough. The DSA could act swiftly if it was to blackmail activists, but has kept mute on the cultists’ attack; this is a sign that our lives and welfare is(sic) of little or no concern to the quarters expected’, the student said.

He added that the school security system is incapacitated and may not even be able to protect the students, should the cultists decide to carry out their threat.

“The CSO and even DSA claimed the message from *OJU* is false and was written by a student, claiming they have traced it, but whether the *OJU* is a cultist or not, you will agree with me that he has affiliation with cultists,’ he added.

”The CSO has said it that they are not responsible for students’ security in town, whereas, that town is where OAU students and OUI students stay together. Unfortunately too, the campus is not secured too, with the attacks here and there on campus,” he stressed.

He lamented the poor security intelligence on campus and how the campus security is incapacitated in handling security matters.

”How will you tell a porter or security man to face somebody armed to the teeth? In fact, nowadays, the office of the CSO is even short of information on security matters on campus,” he added.

Owoeye also called out everyone doubting the authenticity of the message from *OJU* stressing that because it has happened before, there is no guarantee that it will not happen again.

“Let me take you down the memory lane. They wrote a similar letter in 1999 that they would be coming on July 7 but they launched the attack on July 10.” This is just the exact form they came and I fully know that some persons will think that the University has a security unit that guarantees security,” he disclosed.

“If nothing is done, any one of us might end up to be another Afrika or the medical student that never took active parts in unionism or activism but lost his life, Eviano Ekelemo, or Tunde Oke. The July 10 attack claimed the lives of students and left many in severe injuries and these injuries are still like fresh feelings that we cannot afford another attack,” he posited.

He also accused the police especially those at Moore Police station of being complicit  in the evil activities of the 'cultists' by releasing them whenever they are caught.

“History also has it that some cultists were apprehended prior to the July 10 massacre and they were taken to this same Moore police station and they were eventually released. The arms that were seized from these cultists on that Friday night and given to the police have been released to the culprits just for them not to act on it and in fact, all the high ranked officer of the Moore police station could say was that we should go, that the issue would be handled,” he disclosed.

Owoeye called on the general public to help save the students as the school authorities seem incapable of offering protection should anything 'untoward' happen.

“I also charge parents, alumni, press, NGO and the general public for a joint campaign with students to forestall these ugly developments,” he added.
