Two students of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo State have revealed that some academic and non-academic staff members of the school have turned the students into 'money-dispensing machines'.
According to a student in the Department of Chemistry, a particular lecturer identified as Dr. Babajide exploits his students as he likes, adding that he will add to their anguish if they dare complain to the authority.
The student reported that the lecturer was asking students to buy a laptop that he needs to use for the analysis of phytochemicals.
In another department, a student who registered for a course in the School of Education was told to pay a sum of N40,000 to graduate having had an extra year.
In her explanation, all the students who registered for a course in the School of Education were asked to pay another school fee and retake a particular examination, but she declined, stressing that she could not afford another extra year.
While she begged incessantly, she was asked by a secretary in her department who has been known for working out results for students to pay N40,000 for her to be cleared.
Both affected students shared their experiences with SaharaReporters on Sunday, begging that their names should not be disclosed so as not to be subjects of a witch-hunt by members of staff in the school, making money from the students.
“Our lecturers at Adeyemi College of Education have been exploiting the students. They extort money from us as they like. They are collecting money, saying they'll help the students to conduct an analysis. This analysis can be done by the students themselves. They intentionally find errors because of that.
“One of them was even demanding a laptop, asking them to pay N5,000 each to ensure the laptop he claims he wants to use for analysis of phytochemicals was bought. His name is Dr Babajide in the Department of Chemistry. The students are so afraid to talk to the point that he can order them to come to their house and they'll not complain,” a student said.
One of the students who spoke to SaharaReporters said she would do a thanksgiving session in her church if she eventually graduates from the school and receives her call-up letter to serve Nigeria through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), because of what she had gone through in the hands of her lecturers.
“The school said the results of the students that registered for a particular education course that made late payment were not released. They tagged them as they did not register for the course. They told me I would pay another school fee and take that examination again. Then I said no. When I got back to my department, I was told nothing could be done about it and they could not refer me to the Faculty of Education.
“So, the secretary in my department that uses to sell marks to students for money introduced me to another person and negotiated for me. Even the money was supposed to be N30,000 but they told me because I didn’t show up on time and that since the portal had been blocked, I had to pay N40,000 for me not to have another extra year.
“The day that they will give me my call-up letter, I’m going to do thanksgiving in the church. I’m fed up. A lot of people have been asking me when I’m going for the National Youth Service Corps scheme, and I’ve been giving all manner of lame excuses. I just have to pay,” the frustrated student said.
