One Killed, Five Injured As Borno Agency Demolishes Church Building

EYN church members clashed with the state officials which led to the death of one member, leaving five others critically injured.

One person was killed while five others were injured when the Joint Security Taskforce operating with the Borno State Geographical Information System (BOGIS) clashed with church members during the demolition of the Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN) building in Maiduguri, the state capital.

SaharaReporters learnt that the EYN church members clashed with the state officials which led to the death of one member, leaving five others critically injured.

The clash occurred when the BOGIS officials, alongside a joint security task force, went to the church over the regulation of land administration and urban development measures, some of which had affected worship centres.

Meanwhile, the Borno State governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, condemned the shooting and killing of the church member.

The governor ordered the Borno police command to investigate the violent clash/

“The governor condemns in strong terms, the firing of gunshots by a member of security task force as well as some persons who hurled stones at the task force during an encounter on Thursday,” Zulum’s spokesman, Isa Gusau, said, while commiserating with family of the deceased and injured church members.

The governor also called on the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN in Borno State, Bishop Mohammed Naga and spoke with him to commiserate with the Christian community and leadership and family of the EYN church in Borno.

Zulum invited the CAN leadership for meeting at the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday.
