Commercial banks in Zamfara State have said they could only carry out skeletal operations amidst the shutting down all telecommunications networks in the state to check banditry.

The development followed the suspension of weekly markets and other drastic measures in the adjoining troubled North-west and North central states to check activities of bandits in the regions.
In the memo signed by the NCC and directed at the telecos, the suspension of services would last between September 3 through September 17 in the first instance.

The commission had also said the directive was to enable relevant security agencies to carry out required activities towards addressing the security challenge in the state.
In an update to a customer, one of the banks said only limited services could be rendered due to the recent development in the state.
“In line with our promise to always keep you up to date with regulatory directives, please be informed that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the National Communications Commission (NCC) have suspended telecommunication services in the state of Zamfara to combat insurgency,” the message read.
“We would like to assure you that our business offices are open during normal banking hours but with limited services. If you need help with anything, kindly visit a branch close to you and our team of customer service experts will be glad to help.”
